  • Chubby Checker - Goodbye, Victoria (1971)

In 1971, infamous Hendrix producer Ed Chaplin hustled "The King of The Twist" Chubby Checker into recording an album of psychedelic soul for his PPX Productions. The album got various releases under different low-budget imprints; in Britain the album was called "Chequered" and was released on London Records, another version was released in Belgium called "Slow Twistin'" on MFP Reocords, and YET another version on 51 West Records was called "New Revelation". Not too many people heard this album. In fact, the release was so limited that this album is now almost impossible to find on vinyl. Fortunately, the album was recently released for the first time on CD by French record label Underground Masters. In any case, I think it is Chubby Checker's best work. Note that this is the original version, but that I added 25 more seconds by repeating a refrain. I did this for film editing purposes. In this case the focus is "The Twist" as used as a SOUNDTRACK instead of as a dance craze. Note in the opening sequence that the two dancers at the party are keeping perfect time to the music, but are doing the jitterbug. That's the only dancing in the music video which I edited as a sort of "American Graffiti" short film. All of the footage was shot in 1958 and 1959 by Centron Productions, directed and produced by none other than Herk Harvey. You may remember Herk Harvey as the director of the immortal 1962 classic, Carnival Of Souls. He also starred as lead ghoul in the film. However, before and after that movie, Harvey produced and directed a number of educational shorts for high school teens and young adults dealing in a wide range of topics. He also directed shorts for business and industry concerning subjects like motivational speaking and safety on the job. Many of the actors and local extras he used in his shorts also appeared in Carnival Of Souls. All of his films, including the clips used here, were shot in his chosen home town of Lawrence, Kansas. Harvey was born in Windsor, Colorado and grew up in Waverly, Illinois and Fort Collins, Colorado, but made Lawrence his home in 1945 when he began attending the University of Kansas, majoring in theater. The concept here is that the lifestyles and problems for teens and young adults was not all that much different in 1960 than it was a year or two earlier in 1958 and 1959. So the song fits just fine as a soundtrack for these fantastic local actors from Lawrence and nearby areas. Different situations are highlighted in this music video, similar to the various situations that occurred in the major box office hit film, American Graffiti ... and then some! And all the characters know each other too, as the actors who play them all appeared in various Centron Productions shorts. The hit song, "The Twist," placed Chubby Checker on the roadmap to fame. Unlike Little Eva's later hit "The Loco-Motion" which had no official dance step associated with it, "The Twist" became an instant dance craze in 1960 as well as after its re-release in 1961. Again, however, I would remind you that the song is being used as a SOUNDTRACK in this music video and not as the focus of a dance video. Released in June 1960, "The Twist" debuted on July 23, 1960, peaking at #1 on Billboard on September 19, 1960, where it stayed for one week. It soared to #1 on Cash Box on September 10, 1960 and held the position for four weeks. The song resurfaced on November 18, 1961 and peaked again at #1 on Billboard for two weeks on January 13, 1962 and for four weeks at #1 on Cash Box on January 6, 1962. An unusual accomplishment rarely ever to be seen again.

Come on and twist, yeah baby twist Ooh yeah just like this Come on little miss and do the twist Yeah rock on now Yeah twist on now! Twist! +++ "The Twist" is an American pop song written and originally released in early 1959 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters as a B-side to "Teardrops on Your Letter". Ballard's version was a moderate 1960 hit, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. Chubby Checker's 1960 cover version of the song gave birth to the Twist dance craze. His single became a hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960, where it stayed for one week, and setting a record as the only song to reach number 1 in two different hit parade runs when it resurfaced and topped the popular hit parade again for two weeks starting on January 13, 1962. In 1988, "The Twist" again became popular due to a new recording of the song by The Fat Boys featuring Chubby Checker. This version reached number 2 in the United Kingdom and number 1 in Germany. In 2014, Billboard magazine declared the song the "biggest hit" of the 1960s. The song became popular on a Baltimore television dance show hosted by local DJ Buddy Dean; Dean recommended the song to Dick Clark, host of the national American Bandstand. When the song proved popular with his audience, Clark attempted to book Ballard to perform on the show. Ballard was unavailable, and Clark searched for a local artist to record the song. He settled on Checker, whose voice was very similar to Ballard's. Checker's version featured Buddy Savitt on sax and Ellis Tollin on drums,[6] with backing vocals by the Dreamlovers. Exposure for the song on American Bandstand and on The Dick Clark Saturday Night Show helped propel the song to the top of the American charts. In July 1960, Checker performed "The Twist" for the first time in front of a live audience at the Rainbow Club in Wildwood, New Jersey and just weeks later, on Aug. 6, 1960, the song became a national sensation after Checker performed it on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. In late 1961 and early 1962, the twist craze belatedly caught on in high society. Sightings of celebrities doing the dance made the song a hit with adults, particularly after a report in the Cholly Knickerbocker gossip column. Soon there were long lines at the Peppermint Lounge nightclub in New York, the most popular celebrity twisting spot. This new interest made "The Twist" the only recording to hit number one on the United States charts during two separate chart runs, and marked a major turning point for adult acceptance of rock and roll music. +++ Chubby Checker (born Ernest Evans; October 3, 1941) is an American singer. He is widely known for popularizing the twist dance style, with his 1960 hit cover of Hank Ballard's R&B hit "The Twist". In September 2008 "The Twist" topped Billboard's list of the most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since its debut in 1958, an honor it maintained for an August 2013 update of the list. He also popularized the Limbo Rock and its trademark limbo dance, as well as various dance styles such as the fly. Checker is the only recording artist to place five albums in the Top 12 all at once. The performer has often claimed to have personally changed the way we dance to the beat of music, as when he told Billboard, "Anyplace on the planet, when someone has a song that has a beat, they're on the floor dancing apart to the beat. And before Chubby Checker, it wasn't here." Clay Cole agreed: "Chubby Checker has never been properly acknowledged for one major contribution to pop culture—Chubby and the Twist got adults out and onto the dance floor for the first time. Before the Twist dance phenomenon, grown ups did not dance to teenage music.” - Wikipedia
